XPS + Vista = Fantastic
I've been playing around with Vista and XPS files, and it does make a beautiful combo. It's subjective, of course, but look how your XPS files show up on your desktop with a default, out-of-the box, no extra software installed, Vista PC. Again coming from a Mac this is not revolutionary, but for Windows: it's a gigantic step. I think it is just beautiful...  ¶ 11:41 0 Comments

  MXDW subsetting away... The Microsoft XPS Document Writer (MXDW for friends) is the component that is built into Windows Vista, and available for Windows XP as a separate download, that allows users to 'print' to an xps file from any application - it's a great tool to generate XPS files.

Yesterday I noticed that it generates XPS files with subsetted fonts. I assume the reasoning behind this is to protect copyrighted fonts. This introduces some interesting challenges when one wants to change the text in these documents: what to do when the glyph you need is not available? I can think of a few ways to work around this problem, but I'm going to analyze the spec a bit more in detail to see what's allowed ;-)
